You can eat healthy food, you can exercise and drink water and do all of the other healthy things you've been told to do all your life. These things will help you stay healthy and feel healthy. But what about your skin? What happens if your skin is aging faster than you are? What happens if all those days at the beach have finally caught up to you? What happens if wrinkles begin to make your face look more like a topographic map than the unique person that you are?

Aging is inevitable, but luckily there are many treatments now that can help us return to a more youthful appearance. Chemicals peels are such treatments. Performed on their own or used in conjunction with other treatments such as face lifts, Chemical Peels result in younger looking and smoother skin.

About Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are some of the most proven ways to get rid of fine lines, dark spots and uneven skin tones, especially in hard-to-treat places like around the eyes and lips. Chemical Peels have also successfully treated precancerous growths, acne scars, and active acne. Performed on millions of people over the past three decades, Chemical Peels remove top layers of your skin so that fresh new skin can take its place. The solutions used in Chemical Peels cause the old skin to slough off, which sometimes result in a temporary "bad sun burn-like" condition. How long it takes for the skin to heal and new skin to develop will depend on the type of Chemical Peel you have. Light peels have faster healing periods with more subtle results while deeper peels can take weeks to months to heal, but give extraordinary results. This new skin is smoother, softer, and more uniform in color, banishing fine lines around the eyes, blemishes, and uneven skin tone that can make you look older than you actually are.

About the Procedures

There are three levels of Chemical Peels. Dr. Volshteyn can determine the best level for you by meeting with you in a consultation where he will examine your skin and listen to what your goals and expectations are.

Light Chemical Peels (Alphahydroxy Acids, AHA)

AHA Peels are the gentlest of the three types and result in the most subtle results. AHA Peels are often accomplished in less than 30 minutes and require less time to heal. Commonly done as a series (such as weekly treatments for several weeks), AHA Peels treat active acne, sun-damaged skin, dry or rough skin, and some pigmentation problems. Skin is normally sloughed off within five days and there is very little blistering or oozing, if any.

Medium Chemical Peels (Trichloroacetic Acid, TCA)

TCA Peels treat all of the same things as an AHA Peel as well as fine lines and wrinkles, more pronounced skin pigmentation problems, and superficial blemishes. TCA Peels can also be used on other parts of the body such as the neck and chest and can be used on darker skin tones. TCA Peels create a much more significant improvement in the skin and the results last longer. While you may not need to come in for a series of treatments, follow-up treatment at some point is common. TCA Peels typically take two weeks to heal completely, but afterwards will require stringent sun-block use to protect the skin.

Deep Chemical (Phenol) Peels

Phenol Peels are less common, but very effective. Not only do Phenol Peels treat all of the symptoms treatable by AHA and TCA Peels, they successfully wipe away deeper, more pronounced lines around the eyes and mouth. Phenol Peels also wipe out blemishes, freckles, uneven skin color and precancerous growths untreatable by the other peel types. Phenol Peels remove many layers of the epidermis and often require anesthesia during the treatment and pain medication afterwards. Petroleum jelly and bandages are placed on the skin for several days and complete healing can take up to two months. Sun block must always be used afterwards and you will not need another chemical peel.

Risks and Complications

All elective procedures come with some risks and complications. Some people may not be good candidates for phenol peels, especially people with dark skin or heart problems. Other contraindications for all peels include active or frequent cold sores, propensity to develop keloid scars, extensive x-ray exposure to the treatment area or radiation treatment. The most common complication is infection or skin color unevenness. Following post-operative instructions will help to minimize any risks.

Chemical Peels are proven solutions for banishing telltale aging marks on your skin. Don't let wrinkles have the last say on how you appear to the rest of the world. You can draw your own line and stop premature signs of aging now with Chemical Peels.
