What is a crush injury?

A crush injury is defined as a compression of extremities or other parts of the body that causes muscle swelling and/or neurological disturbances in the affected areas of the body. It is VERY important to seek early aggressive treatment in a patient who is suspected to have a crush injury. It is crucial to consider the severity of soft tissue damage and fractures, and the duration of the compression/entrapment. A crush injury can lead to crush syndrome which can be fatal – seek medical attention immediately.

What are the signs and symptoms of a crush injury?

  • Skin may remain intact, but may be discolored and bruised
  • Swelling appears rapidly after pressure release
  • Pulse may or may not be present in the crushed extremity
  • Excruciating pain after pressure release

How is a crush injury treated?

When a crush injury is evaluated for treatment, several factors are considered.

  • The duration and force of compression on the extremity
  • The extent of damage to the extremity
  • The patient’s age, medical history and overall health

SEEK MEDICAL TREATMENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER INITIAL INJURY. DELAYING TREATMENT OR WAITING FOR SYMPTOMS TO DEVELOP MAY RESULT IN RENAL FAILURE.
